CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Fitzwilliam Darcy grasped his sister’s arm firmly and marched her out of the gaudy and gilt-ladened receiving parlor at Rosings Park at a pace far too rapid to be labeled courteous. He was determined to become a better and more accepting man. He had been willing to admit Georgiana was growing up; he was going to do everything he could to help her find her own strength and confidence.

But his new resolves to better himself, to be more accepting of others, and to treat Georgie as a young adult did not mean he would countenance his much younger sister hearing language that would shock a dock worker being screeched at an ear-splitting volume by a red-faced, vulgar harridan as she hurled crockery at the fireplace and threatened them all with her cane. How his Aunt Catherine even knew those words were more than he could fathom but staying and listening to her, having Georgiana listen to her, was simply insupportable.

Fortunately, Georgiana was as shocked at Lady Catherine’s behavior as her brother was and offered no resistance to their quick flight. In fact, she was practically running beside him in her haste to quit the room.

“Good heavens, brother, I have never seen such a display in all my life,” she gasped. “I do not even know what any of those words mean but I am quite certain that they are not words Mrs. Annesley would be at all comfortable being asked to explain.”

“Neither am I comfortable my dear, so do not even bother to enquire,” he replied stiffly, still shocked. “Suffice it to say that if I were in the habit of placing wagers I would have placed a very large one that no gentlewoman would ever have even heard those words much less be screeching them out in her own parlor. Good heavens! I am extremely grateful that poor Anne left for her room before the ranting started.”

They both jumped and turned at the sound of the parlor door opening, relaxing as they saw Richard hastily closing the door and coming quickly toward them with an expression of dazed shock on his face. “Darcy. Did you ever think to hear such a thing? I would take my oath, Cousin, that I have met badly wounded men coming from the field of battle who were less vulgar.” He stopped and turned a ferocious scowl on his ward. “And do not think I will tell you what those words mean young lady because I would choke if I even tried.”

Completely unintimidated by the Colonel’s menacing expression she began to giggle. “I have no intention of asking anyone, indeed I do not believe I want to know. Does Aunt Margaret know what the words mean do you think?” she asked merrily, unable to contain her either her curiosity or her mirth.

“I am thankful to say I have no idea if she does and I am deeply grateful that even if she does my mother would never say any of them at any time, ever,” he replied firmly.
